Sony and Mitsubishi Launch AI Vision Venture for Factories

Sony Semiconductor Solutions and Mitsubishi Electric have agreed to establish a joint venture focused on AI-powered vision sensors for manufacturing.

The Sony Mitsubishi AI vision joint venture, named Advanced Vision Solutions, is expected to begin operations in October 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. Mitsubishi Electric will own 60% of the company, while Sony Semiconductor Solutions will hold the remaining 40%.

AI vision for manufacturing

The new company will develop sensors capable of analysing visual information directly on the device using artificial intelligence.

These systems are designed to monitor factory conditions, product quality, equipment activity and maintenance requirements that can be difficult to identify using traditional industrial sensors.

The technology will connect visual analysis with automated decision-making and machine control. This could allow production equipment to respond to changing conditions with less human intervention.

Combining Sony and Mitsubishi technology

The partnership brings together Sony’s image sensors and edge AI capabilities with Mitsubishi Electric’s experience in factory automation systems.

Sony’s sensors will act as the visual layer, capturing information from production lines and processing selected data close to where it is generated. Performing AI analysis on the sensor can reduce the need to transfer large amounts of visual data to external servers.

Mitsubishi Electric will contribute industrial control technology and knowledge gained from supplying automation equipment to manufacturers.

The companies plan to connect AI vision data with Mitsubishi Electric’s Serendie digital platform and other factory information.

Supporting autonomous factories

The joint venture will target manufacturers seeking to reduce manual work, improve quality control and operate equipment more autonomously.

Vision sensors can inspect products, identify their position, detect defects and monitor changes in machines or production environments in real time.

Sony and Mitsubishi Electric also plan to combine image data with other information collected across factories. This multimodal approach could detect early warning signs that may not be visible through one type of sensor alone.

The companies said their goal is to create products that manufacturers can deploy without requiring specialised knowledge of optics or artificial intelligence.

Responding to labor shortages

Japanese manufacturers are facing growing pressure to automate as skilled workers become more difficult to recruit and retain.

Mitsubishi Electric said demand is increasing for labor-saving systems, unmanned production and equipment that can optimise its own operation.

The company sees AI vision sensors as a new core component of its factory automation business. By connecting sensing, analysis and control, the systems could help manufacturers react more quickly to equipment problems and production changes.

A step toward physical AI

The partnership is also part of the wider development of physical AI, where artificial intelligence interacts directly with machines and real-world environments.

Unlike software-based AI services, physical AI systems must understand visual and sensor information before making decisions that affect equipment, robots or production lines.

Sony described image sensors as the “eyes” that provide AI systems with information about real-world conditions. Mitsubishi Electric’s automation technology can then use those insights to control industrial equipment.

Advanced Vision Solutions will be based in Yokohama, Japan, and led by representative Tamiki Kobayashi.

The partnership could help both companies expand their roles in smart manufacturing as factories invest in autonomous equipment, predictive maintenance and AI-supported quality control.
