OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Health to eligible users across the United States, expanding a feature that was previously available to a limited testing group.
The service is available to logged-in users aged 18 and older across Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. It is being introduced gradually on the web and iOS, so some eligible accounts may not receive immediate access.
Connected health information
Users can ask general health questions without connecting personal information. Those seeking more personalized responses can link Apple Health, supported U.S. medical records, One Medical or Function Health.
ChatGPT can then help compare new laboratory results with earlier tests, summarize changes since a medical appointment or examine patterns involving sleep, activity and exercise. Apple Health connections require an iPhone.
OpenAI says more than 300 million people ask ChatGPT health-related questions each week. During early testing, over 70% of health conversations took place outside the dedicated Health area.
The updated system therefore allows users to grant ChatGPT permission to consider relevant health information during regular conversations. It could, for example, take an allergy into account when suggesting food or consider a recent injury when helping plan physical activities.
Privacy and user control
ChatGPT asks for permission before using connected medical records or Apple Health data unless the user chooses to provide permanent access.
OpenAI says connected health information and conversations that use it are not used to train its foundation models or target advertising. Users can disconnect an account at any time, after which synced information is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days.
Not a medical replacement
OpenAI has improved its models using evaluations developed with physicians, but the company warns that ChatGPT can still make mistakes.
ChatGPT Health is intended to help people understand information and prepare better questions. It is not designed to diagnose conditions, recommend treatment or replace professional medical care. Important health information should still be verified with a qualified healthcare provider.
