Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 Shakes China’s AI Market

Chinese startup Moonshot AI has attracted global attention with Kimi K3, a massive open-weight artificial intelligence model designed for coding, reasoning and complex knowledge work.

The launch of Moonshot AI Kimi K3 pressured shares of competing Chinese AI companies and challenged the belief that China’s leading models remain far behind systems developed by OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.

Moonshot describes Kimi K3 as the world’s first open model in the three-trillion-parameter class. The system contains 2.8 trillion parameters, supports a one-million-token context window and can process text, images and video.

What is Moonshot AI?

Moonshot AI was founded in Beijing in 2023 by artificial intelligence researcher Yang Zhilin.

The company is one of China’s most closely watched AI startups and is backed by major technology and investment groups. Its Kimi assistant initially became known for processing unusually long documents before Moonshot expanded into coding, research and autonomous agent products.

Moonshot raised more than $2 billion in May 2026 from investors including Meituan, China Mobile and CPE. Its total historical funding has reportedly exceeded $5.5 billion, while its valuation reached approximately $30 billion in June.

The company is also considering a potential Hong Kong listing and has reportedly discussed the process with financial advisers.

Why Kimi K3 matters

Kimi K3 is designed for long-running tasks that require a model to use tools, navigate large code repositories and complete projects with limited human supervision.

Moonshot says its new architecture improves scaling efficiency by approximately 2.5 times compared with Kimi K2. The model uses a mixture-of-experts design that activates only part of its total network for each task, reducing the computing required during operation.

The company reported strong performance in coding, GPU optimisation, research and office productivity tests. Independent evaluations also placed Kimi K3 near several leading proprietary models on complex multi-step tasks.

However, Moonshot acknowledged that its model still trails the strongest closed systems overall, including Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol. Benchmark results can also vary depending on the testing environment and software used to operate each model.

Chinese AI stocks fall

The market reacted sharply to Kimi K3’s release.

Shares of Chinese AI developers Zhipu and MiniMax fell about 27.7% and 16.5%, respectively, during Hong Kong trading on July 17. The declines suggested that investors were concerned about stronger competition from Moonshot and the effect of powerful open models on pricing and market share.

An open-weight model allows developers to download, modify and deploy the underlying system rather than depend entirely on a closed commercial API.

This can attract businesses that want greater control over data, infrastructure and model customisation. It may also pressure competitors to reduce prices or release their own technology more openly.

Kimi K3’s enormous size creates an important limitation. Few organisations will be able to operate the full model independently because it requires expensive computing infrastructure. Moonshot recommends configurations containing at least 64 accelerators, while analysts estimate that local deployment could require hardware worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Demand strains Moonshot’s capacity

Strong interest in Kimi K3 quickly created infrastructure problems.

Moonshot temporarily stopped accepting new consumer subscriptions after user requests approached the limits of its computing clusters. The company said it would prioritise existing paying customers and reopen subscriptions gradually as more capacity became available.

The shortage highlights a wider challenge facing Chinese AI developers. Advanced models require large numbers of high-performance chips, but US export restrictions have limited access to some of Nvidia’s most powerful processors.

Moonshot and its competitors therefore need substantial funding to expand their computing capacity while continuing to train and operate increasingly large models.

A new stage in the AI race

Kimi K3 shows how rapidly China’s open-model ecosystem is advancing.

Companies including Moonshot, Z.ai, MiniMax, Alibaba and DeepSeek are releasing stronger systems at lower prices and with shorter development cycles. Their progress is narrowing the perceived gap between Chinese models and leading US platforms.

Moonshot plans to release the full Kimi K3 model weights by July 27, 2026. The model is already available through Kimi’s consumer products, coding tools and API platform.

Its long-term impact will depend on independent testing, infrastructure availability and whether developers adopt it for real production workloads.

For now, Kimi K3 has strengthened Moonshot’s position, disrupted valuations among its competitors and demonstrated that open-weight Chinese AI models are becoming an increasingly important force in the global market.
