AMD to Invest Up to $5 Billion in Anthropic Chip Deal

AMD to Invest Up to $5 Billion in Anthropic Chip Deal

AMD has agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of a major partnership covering AI chips, infrastructure and software development.

Under the AMD Anthropic chip deal, the Claude developer plans to deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450-series GPUs through the company’s Helios rack-scale systems. Deployment of the first gigawatt is expected to begin during the first half of 2027.

Large AI infrastructure commitment

Anthropic will use Helios systems equipped with AMD Instinct MI455X accelerators, EPYC “Venice” processors, Pensando networking and ROCm software.

The agreement builds on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and could generate tens of billions of dollars in hardware sales for AMD as the deployment expands.

Anthropic needs additional computing capacity to train and operate Claude as demand for its AI products continues to grow. The company already uses a diversified mix of Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium processors and Nvidia GPUs. Adding AMD provides another source of large-scale computing infrastructure.

AMD makes strategic investment

AMD has committed to invest as much as $5 billion in Anthropic through a future equity investment linked to the wider partnership.

The arrangement follows a growing industry trend in which chipmakers and cloud providers invest in AI companies that later become major customers for their infrastructure.

For AMD, the agreement provides a significant opportunity to establish Helios and the MI450 generation as alternatives to Nvidia’s dominant AI platforms.

Claude supports AMD development

The partnership also includes a multi-year engineering collaboration.

AMD and Anthropic plan to use Claude to optimise workloads for Instinct GPUs and accelerate development of the ROCm software ecosystem. AMD will also introduce Claude more broadly across its engineering and product-development teams.

Software remains one of the most important parts of AI hardware adoption. Nvidia’s CUDA platform has a mature developer ecosystem, while AMD is investing heavily in ROCm to make its accelerators easier to use for training and inference.

Competition for AI computing

The Anthropic agreement adds another major AI customer to AMD’s expanding infrastructure business.

AMD has also announced large deployments involving Microsoft and OpenAI as it attempts to gain a larger share of the market for data-centre accelerators and complete AI systems.

The long-term impact will depend on whether AMD delivers the planned infrastructure on schedule and whether Helios can offer competitive performance, efficiency and software support.

For Anthropic, the partnership provides more computing capacity and reduces dependence on any single chip or cloud provider. For AMD, it represents one of its largest opportunities to challenge Nvidia in the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market.
